Year 10 Summer Work

Our message to Year 10 students

This summer it's important that you have a break and disconnect from work for a while. Year 11 will be an intensive year and you'll be studying really hard both in the Academy and at home, so you need some time to relax and come back refreshed. While of course you must continue observing social distancing rules, you can still see your friends and spend time outdoors. Focus on your wellbeing, and have a great break!

You might be anxious about keeping up with your studies during the summer. For each subject, we've recommended some revision activities below. You're welcome to spend time on some of these, so you come back in September feeling confident, but they're not compulsory and we won't be asking you to hand anything in. It's up to you whether to do a small amount each week (e.g. your Tassomai daily goals), or set aside a few days for catch-up in certain subjects, or just switch off for the entire holiday - which is absolutely fine.

Mathematics

The best way to secure your knowledge in Maths is through regular practice. We recommend completing the 5 a Day worksheets on CorbettMaths for at least 4 days a week (each one will only take 10 minutes).

  • Choose the right level depending on your group (see below), and then scroll down to find the worksheet for the current date.

  1. G1 - Higher plus

  2. G2/B1- Higher

  3. G3/B2 - Foundation plus

  4. G4/B3 - Foundation

  5. B4 - Numeracy

  • Write down your working on paper, and try to answer as much as you can.

  • When you've finished, check your work using the answers which are also provided.

  • If you find a topic that you're struggling with, go to Maths Watch and check out the video.

  • Refresh your coding skills in Python ready for the programming project using this link.

We recommend using the Monkey Monkey revision website to regularly check what you can remember. Aim to earn 50 bananas a week! It has sections on the subjects that you have done so far (Health and the People, Elizabethan England and Germany) but the fourth topic is different to the one we do. This will also help you fill in any gaps in your knowledge if you do it regularly.

Consider what skills you will use and how you can present the dishes to make them look appetising.

  • For Composition; use Band Lab to maintain and improve your composition skills, set yourself challenges to compose short pieces in new styles and genres. If you are lucky enough to have GarageBand installed on any of your devices, make you use of this also.

Performing Arts

A good way to develop your skills in Performing Arts is to watch live performance work as often as possible and consider the impact that the performance and design aspects had on you as an audience member. Below is a performance of Macbeth that is currently available for free online (there are lots more free performances if you keep your eyes open). I have selected this performance in particular as you can compare it to the 2018 RSC version that we watched in lessons.

Try and watch at least one theatrical performance and make notes on aspects such as - the type of stage used, the actors' use of characterisation, the use of costume design, the use of set design, the use of sound and lighting and any practitioner influences that you notice (Stanislavski's Naturalism or Brecht's Epic Theatre).

View a 90 minute version of Macbeth at the Shakespeare Globe Theatre here.
